Ghassan Abu-Sittah is a **British-Palestinian plastic and reconstructive surgeon** specializing in craniofacial surgery, trauma reconstruction, and conflict medicine.[1][4] Born in Kuwait in 1969 to a Palestinian father and Lebanese mother, his family became refugees after being expelled from their ancestral land during the 1948 Nakba.[2] He completed his medical education at the University of Glasgow and pursued specialized fellowships in pediatric craniofacial surgery, cleft surgery, and trauma reconstruction at prestigious London institutions including Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Royal London Hospital.[4] Abu-Sittah's career has been defined by humanitarian work in conflict zones. He first visited the Gaza Strip as a medical student during the First Intifada in 1989 and subsequently provided medical assistance during the Second Intifada, the 2008-2009 Gaza War, the 2012 Israeli operation, the 2014 Gaza War, and the 2018 Great March of Return.[1] He has also worked as a war surgeon in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen.[4] In 2011, he became Associate Professor and Head of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, and in 2015 became a founding director of the university's Conflict Medicine Program.[4] Abu-Sittah holds the position of Clinical Lead for the Operational Trauma Initiative at the World Health Organization and serves on the boards of INARA and Medical Aid for Palestinians.[2][4] He is recognized internationally as a leading authority in conflict medicine and has received multiple awards for his humanitarian work. Most recently, Abu-Sittah arrived in Gaza on October 9, 2023, immediately before the territory was sealed off, and spent 43 days working under constant bombardment at Al-Shifa and Al-Ahli hospitals.[2][3] He was present during the October 17, 2023 Al-Ahli Hospital incident and subsequently gave evidence to the International Court of Justice at the Hague in January 2024.[6]
